It was originally going to be about Mars Phoenix, and the fact that it was on twitter (and did the saddest tweet ever while it was there), but the Comment Piece in the Christmas New Scientist inspired me to turn it into something about the direction that science is heading in which turned into the media portrayal of science issues.
Go and have a look at the link if you’ve got a bit of time to investigate. People much more articulate, scientific, and legally minded than me have commented on there, but what I will add is that bad science reporting is compounded by a lack of consistency when addressing risks and talking about how to manage them but that’s a whole other song.
Now, from what I can see, it’s got a series of pros and cons. The biggy is the price, which is around six and a half *thousand* bucks, putting it well out of the range of most actual musicians in local bands and into midlife crisis shredder axe territory where speed and proficiency is confused with musicianship, and expensive waxes are applied to fretboards. Your best bet to get one may be searching charity shops in 30 years.
BUT - from looking at other Youtubes, it has a system which gives energy to vibrating strings to just opens up a whole new range of sounds and sustain. It’s got serious potential as a force for the lightside (shoegazing) rather than the darkside (shredding) as this clip shows, I think:
So looking forward to seeing a shoegazing band use one, if you spot one then let me know please!
(also, after watching some other stuff on Youtubes has moog always been pronounced “mowg” rather than “moohg” - have I been making a twit of myself for all these years)
This clip is probably a good introduction to everything it can do.
